Island Avenue Neighborhood Waterline Replacement
The Greater Pine Island Water Association is pleased to announce the placement and upgrade of the waterlines that serve areas east of Island Avenue, in Matlacha, that have become problematic due to continuing above average water leakage and line breaks.
All of the water lines serving the streets east of Island Avenue are scheduled to be improved. The plan calls for the replacement of current 2-inch water mains with thicker 4-inch water mains. The thicker walled pipe will minimize future water line breaks and bring more available water volume to the area.
Construction for the general area is scheduled to begin on November 7th and conclude the end of March 2012. Construction dates for the individual streets have not been set. The selected contractor, Stevens and Layton, typically works 10-hour days Monday – Thursday beginning at 7:30am. To minimize disruption to residents, the plan is to treat the individual streets as 12 separate projects and install each street’s new water line continuously until finished. The plan also calls for minimizing disruption to decorator driveways and extensive landscaping that has been placed in the easements, by drilling under these areas as necessary.
Once installed, the new water line must be connected to the water main on Island Avenue. This connection usually takes about one hour. In addition, the service line that connects the house meter to the street main will have to be disconnected from the old line and then re-connect to the new waterline. These actions will result in a disruption of the water service. Precautionary boil water notices may also be issued.
When practical, the Association will notify residents of water disruptions and/or boil water notices through the use of our new reverse 911 call system and/or the use of door hangers. To ensure timely notification by telephone, please make sure you have an emergency telephone number on file at our office.
The Greater Pine Island Water Association thanks residents in advance for their understanding and regrets any inconvenience during this water line improvement period.
